Are You Suffering
From Acid Reflux Without
Heartburn? |
|
There are a number of
symptoms that come with the condition of acid reflux and most
of them cannot be easily ignored. The burning feeling in the
chest and throat known as heartburn certainly cannot be. It is
the most common and well-known symptom of acid reflux and some
people have reported similarities with some of the pain felt
during a heart attack. It is quite possible, though rare, that
you may have acid reflux without having heartburn as a symptom
and so may not realize you have acid reflux.
You may be wondering what
specifically is the cause for the burning sensation associated
with heartburn. What is happening is that the acidic juices
from the stomach are rising up through your chest and into your
esophagus. While in less severe cases this can be nothing more
than a post-meal irritation like belching, in more severe cases
people will feel as if their whole chest is on fire. However,
everyone is different and some people have a less sensitive
esophagus than others and so acid reflux without heartburn is
possible for them. Other parts of the body though will not be
able to withstand the stomach acid like this such as the larynx
and the throat and so you are sure to feel pain there if no in
the esophagus.
Even if you have acid
reflux without heartburn, you should still be advised to try
some of the remedies that people with heartburn have. This is
provided that they recognize that the symptoms they have are
those of acid reflux. Since they do not feel heartburn they may
not be aware they have acid reflux. A hoarse voice and a dry
and persistent cough are indicators of possible acid
reflux.
Just because the heartburn
is not being felt it does not mean that the refluxing stomach
acid is not causing damage to the esophagus. This means that
treatment for heartburn should still be taken to avoid long
term damage being caused. If you feel a dry and persistent
cough, have difficulty swallowing or feel the need to clear
your throat regularly then it is likely that some of the tender
tissues in your throat are being damaged by the
acid.
If the person finds that
certain foods tend to make these symptoms worse, or more
frequent, they would be better served to avoid them, or at
least talk to the doctor about products that can help reduce
the amount of stomach acid that can cause acid reflux without
heartburn. Often times, a change in diet is all it takes to
eliminate acid indigestion.
There are a number of
natural remedies that one can adopt to try and stop their acid
reflux. The most commonly advised of these is to change your
diet. As a general guideline, eating a low-fat diet with plenty
of vegetables and wholegrain is the best way to modify this
part of your lifestyle. Avoiding smoking and alcohol are also
strongly advised.
If you still seem to have
many of the symptoms of acid reflux without heartburn, despite
having undergone lifestyle changes tried taking antacids, then
perhaps you should visit your doctor. It is possible you have
other medical conditions that he may need to have you checked
for.
