If you are one of the many
million sufferers of acid reflux then I am sure you will be
very familiar with the painful symptom heartburn. The burning
sensation that is caused by acid from the stomach flowing into
the esophagus is an extremely painful and unpleasant problem.
Many sufferers have noted that heartburn can strike at its
worst when they are trying to sleep. The reason for this is
that when lying down horizontal we do not have the benefit of
gravity to help keep the acid from flowing up from the stomach
to the esophagus.
After a long and tiring
day I am sure the last thing you want is to have a disrupted
sleep. However, lying down and feeling the contents of your
stomach rising up from your stomach, through your chest and to
your esophagus, is sure to disrupt your sleep. One way to try
to ensure that this does not happen is to have your last meal
at least 3 hours before going to bed. For some people though
their lifestyle does not make this easy or possible and so
other solutions are required. One of these is known as an acid
reflux pillow which we shall now discuss.
You might be wondering why
you need an acid reflux pillow rather than just using more
normal pillows. Well, the reason is that acid reflux pillows
are specially designed keep the head elevated sufficiently to
keep acidic gastric juices from passing through to the
esophagus while still ensuring a comfortable sleep is possible.
The pillow itself is inflated and keeps your body in a certain
reclined position that best helps to stop acid reflux. As with
any product, the price you pay for your pillow will be
dependant on the quality of the materials used.
So, before splashing out
on purchasing one of these acid reflux pillows you will
probably be interested to know if they actually work. The
conclusions that have been drawn suggest that the results vary
from one person to the next. If you do decide to buy one, then
always bare in mind that they are only able to provide relief
from acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn during the night.
The acid reflux problem you have will still remain and so you
should consult with your doctor and use other treatments in
addition to it.
There are some other
things that you should consider before buying an acid reflux
pillow. First of all, it would be good idea to run it past your
doctor to see if it something that he would recommend. He may
advise that with other treatments such as medications, that the
problem can be resolved without the pillow. Another thing to be
aware of is if you have any kind of back or spinal problems
using an acid reflux pillow could exacerbate those
conditions.
