Is Acid Reflux Surgery Right For
You?

One of the most widespread
conditions all over the world is that of acid reflux. This is
when stomach contents including corrosive acid rise up from the
stomach to the esophagus. The painful burning feeling that this
causes is known as heartburn and is something that many people
are eager to have no more of.
In most cases acid reflux
is not something that can be treated and cured overnight. It
typically requires a long term course of treatment and
lifestyle changes to gain relief from the condition. Most
people with mild acid reflux are recommended to take
medications such as antacids and proton pump inhibitors which
reduce acid production in the stomach.
So, in many cases these
medications plus a series of lifestyle and dietary
modifications can be enough to successfully relieve the worst
of the symptoms. However, in the most serious of cases the
sufferer may need to take more drastic action to resolve the
problem. This is in the form of acid reflux surgery and is
normally recommended as a last resort if all else
fails.
You may be wondering what
exactly is involved with acid reflux surgery. Usually people
that suffer from the worst cases of acid reflux have a weaker
Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) than others. This is the
muscle at the base of the esophagus which when working properly
ensures that food only travels in the direction towards the
stomach. Acid reflux surgery is typically very successful in
resolving the condition as it involves tightening the LES to
ensure it is able to resume normal effective
function.
If everything you have
tried to relieve acid reflux with has so far proved not to help
enough, then it is recommended to raise the issue of acid
reflux surgery with your GP. He will advise that if you do
intend to go through with the procedure then you should still
maintain the lifestyle changes you undertook.
These lifestyle changes
should enable you to live a more healthy and active life for
longer and should be recommended to anyone not just to relieve
acid reflux. So, bare this in mind and remember that undergoing
acid reflux surgery does not mean that you should revert back
to your old lifestyle habits.
