Long Term Acid Reflux Relief May Require Lifestyle
Changes

If you have ever had an
acid reflux attack you will know how painful they can be. In
fact, many people mistake the burning sensation it causes them
to feel in their chests for a heart attack. At this point, they
need to find relief as soon as possible and this can often be
in the form of chewing antacid tablets to try and neutralize
the troublesome acid. However, in order to receive acid reflux
relief in the long term, it has been shown that lifestyle
changes may be required.
There are many ways in
which people attempt to gain relief from the painful symptoms
of acid reflux. As well as antacids, some people may be
prescribed a course of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which
reduce the production of acid in the stomach. Patients taking
PPIs such as Nexium need to be monitored carefully to ensure
they do not end up with digestive problems from having
insufficient stomach acid. Also, the stomach produces more acid
to break down certain types of foods and so if these foods can
be moderated some acid reflux relief can be
achieved.
So, one of the best ways
to natural gain acid reflux relief is to target the source of
the problem. This means not just taking medications whenever
reflux strikes but actually making the lifestyle changes that
ensure it does not occur in the first place. Unfortunately,
this means reducing or cutting out altogether some of our
favorite foods such as high-fat meat, dairy products,
chocolate, citrus fruits and tomatoes. Also, heavy smoking and
drinking are never a good idea in general not least because
they will also contribute to your acid reflux
problem.
If acid reflux relief
cannot be achieved even with the changes in your lifestyle then
you may need to consider further steps to resolve the problem.
Using medications for temporary relief are not advised for
prolonged and chronic acid reflux as they can lead to digestive
problems. So, if all else fails, your doctor may have to advise
a surgical procedure to tighten your Lower Esophageal Sphincter
(LES). The LES is supposed to block acid from reaching the
esophagus, but many people have a weak LES and hence acid can
get through.
However you decide to seek
acid reflux relief the main thing is not to give up and to
continue to seek advice from experts on the subject.
